Compare Permissions

The Compare view puts a profile and a permission set side by side so you can see exactly where they match and where they differ. Most useful after a migration, when you want to confirm the new permission set accurately reflects the source profile.

Starting a Comparison

From the profile detail view, click the Compare button at the top. You'll be prompted to select a permission set to compare against.

The dropdown shows all permission sets in your org. Pick the one you want to compare -- typically the permission set that was created from this profile during migration.

Reading the Comparison

The layout is the same accordion structure as the detail view, but each permission now shows values from both the profile and the permission set.

Differences are color-coded:

  • Green -- Present in the permission set but not on the profile (the permission set has something extra).
  • Red -- On the profile but missing from the permission set (a gap in coverage).
  • No highlight -- The values match.

Filtering the Comparison

Three filter options help you zero in:

FilterWhat It Shows
Show AllEvery permission from both the profile and the permission set
Show Differences OnlyOnly the permissions where the profile and permission set disagree
Show Matches OnlyOnly the permissions that are identical between both

Show Differences Only is the most useful filter after a migration. If it comes back empty, your migration was a perfect match.

tip

After running a migration, use Compare to verify the new permission set matches the source profile. Select "Show Differences Only" to quickly spot any gaps.

Common Comparison Scenarios

  • Post-migration verification. Compare the source profile against the new permission set. Red items are permissions that didn't make it across.
  • Drift detection. Someone manually edited a permission set after migration? Compare it against the original profile to see what changed.
  • Pre-migration planning. Compare a profile against an existing permission set to see how much overlap already exists before you migrate.

Next Steps

You can export the comparison data to CSV for offline review or sharing.
